John McCarthy is the Interim General Manager, Health Security at PHF Science where he leads multidisciplinary teams focused on enabling New Zealand to prepare for, prevent, respond to and recover from threats and hazards to human health. John is a senior leader in public health with extensive experience in public health intelligence, surveillance, analytics and strategic delivery across New Zealand’s health system. John has held senior leadership roles at the Ministry of Health, including leading intelligence and surveillance functions during the response to the COVID-19 pandemic. John holds a PhD in population modelling and is recognised for his collaborative, evidence-informed approach to strengthening public health security and improving outcomes for communities across Aotearoa New Zealand.
